• What is Vein Disease?

Diseased veins occur when the internal walls of the leg veins and valves within begin to deteriorate. When a valve has given out, the blood may begin to flow in the wrong direction at times towards the feet rather than back towards the heart.

This can cause spider veins or in deeper cases, varicose veins to occur. When blood is no longer pumped effectively from the lower leg, the veins will not empty even with the action of walking. They remain filled with blood and the pressure in the veins never decreases. This condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency. Over time it can become more and more pronounced leading to deep, twisted veins or even discoloration of the skin due to blood leakage.

Over the past decade tremendous advances in medical technology have been made. The way doctors used to have to treat venous issues – simply automatically resorting to utilizing the semi invasive technique of vein stripping is a thing of the past. It has been replaced with endovenous closure procedures, also known as endovenous radio frequency ablation, as the preferred method of treatment. Because of this many patients who may not have been candidates for treatment before are now excellent candidates.

It has been estimated that approximately 30 million adults in the USA alone may suffer from symptomatic treatable superficial venous insufficiency. Of the veins in the legs only 5% of them are surface (above the muscle layer) making them potentially visible if issues occur. By using an ultrasound the Vein Specialists can identify and even treat underlying problems even before they become visible. Taking a proactive approach and having a vein health screening can save you from future issues.
