leg swellingLeg swelling can be very uncomfortable. Especially during the hot summer months here in Florida. Edema, the technical name for leg swelling, can be caused by many types of diseases and lifestyle decisions. Obesity, medications, pregnancy, venous insufficiency, sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, and blood clots can all lead to edema. There are, however, some things that you can do to reduce the swelling in your legs.

    • Decrease the amount of sodium in your diet. Don’t reach for the salt shaker as much during your meals.
    • Increase the amount of water that you drink during the day. Water will help to take toxins out of your body and help to reduce leg swelling.
    • Increase the amount of exercise that you do every day. If you sit or stand for a long time during the day, be sure to either get up and walk around or stretch your legs from time to time. Light walking, swimming, and non-impact exercises are perfect for beginners. Continue your normal regimen if you already have an exercise program.
    • Wear compression stockings to support your veins. These can be worn during your normal daily activities. Compression stockings not only help with swelling but can reduce the chance of you developing varicose veins. You may want your doctor to recommend the type of stocking for your particular swelling.
    • Elevate your legs if you have a chance during the day. Gravity can assist your veins in returning de-oxygenated blood to your heart. It will take the pressure of all the work off of your veins.

If you are having any type of leg swelling, it is important that you go to a specialist to get evaluated. You could have a serious vein condition that needs to be treated. If you would like a FREE vein evaluation, go to EVeinScreening.com.
