You comfort is very important when it comes to living with your varicose veins. Your legs may feel heavy and hurt from time to time. Some patients will ask the question of “Is it better to sit or to stand” when they have varicose veins. Actually, for a prolonged time, neither is ideal. A good medium between the two is recommended.

Sitting in one position, whether for a job or traveling, does not engage your calf muscles. The calf muscles play a large role in pushing blood back to your heart through your veins. If you are sitting for long periods of time, your calf muscle is not able to do this important job. Not only can you suffer from varicose veins, you can develop life-threatening blot clots that can result in stroke or death. These Deep Vein Thrombosis, DVT’s, are preventable by engaging your legs in activity such as walking, leg lifts, and any aerobic activity.

Standing in one position for a long time can put undue stress on your legs, hips and pelvis. The pressure from gravity can create weaknesses in the walls of your veins and damage in your vein’s valves. This combination creates varicose veins that are uncomfortable and unsightly. These twisted, bulging bluish-color veins tend to be found on your ankles and legs. Standing for prolonged periods of time is not recommended.

In addition to standing or sitting for too long, being overweight for either one is another factor that will cause varicose veins. Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a nutritious diet will help in reducing your chances of varicose veins.
