spider veinsIf a patch of little, blue or red veins on your body suddenly pops up, normally found behind the knees, then you have discovered spider veins. These little superficial veins can show up anywhere on your body, but the legs and face are common areas.

Spider veins, technically referred to as telangiectasia, are caused from too much pressure on your veins. Heredity and age do, however, play a factor in who acquires them. Individuals who tend to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time are more apt to have spider veins on their legs.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but they are smaller and closer to the skin. In addition to their unsightly appearance, spider veins can make your legs feel heavy, they can tire easier, and they are prone to more swelling than those with healthy veins. There are some ways to alleviate the symptoms of spider veins.

    • Reduce your weight. By carrying additional weight on your body, you are putting un-needed pressure on your leg veins. Try to get some exercise and modify your diet to lose some pounds. This will help in taking the weight off of your veins.
    • If you have existing varicose veins, consider getting those treated. Sclerotherapy, an injection of a foam saline solution that obliterates the damaged vein, is a very effective procedure. The recovery time is minimal and you will have only slight discomfort during the procedure. Other techniques to rid your body of veins are available through vascular surgeons. You will want to consult with a physician on the best option for your situation. By getting rid of varicose veins, you will reduce the chance of additional spider veins from popping up.
    • Purchase and wear compression stockings. Compression stocking are made specifically to help support the venous system. With tapering of the stocking’s tightness, it helps to squeeze the blood back up to your heart.
    • Spider veins can also appear on your face, so be sure to wear sunblock while outside. They can pop up on sun damaged skin.
