By this point, you’ve already learned a lot of preventative methods from family, friends, the Internet and other sources in regards to varicose veins. But, have you ever considered yoga, which is a gentle, non-impact type of exercise that has many health benefits. This type of exercise consists of poses of the body that can alleviate vein pain, swelling, post-surgical discomfort and help in the overall health of your legs?

Yoga is an age-old method of exercise that originated in India over 26,000 years ago. Many people have relied on its health benefits for both body and mind. Yoga has been known to boost immunity, prevent joint breakdown, increase lung function, lift your spirits and increase flexibility. The increase in blood flow while performing yoga postures is what can assist you in reducing the pain and swelling of varicose veins.

Our blood vessels are continually pumping blood to our extremities, and at the same time, the major veins in our legs are pumping blood back to the heart. Working against gravity, this can be quite the chore. When our blood vessels are compromised or damaged, anything you can do to help assist the blood flow will benefit your legs. You don’t need to be a top athlete to perform these yoga poses. Go at your own pace and hold the poses in a manner and duration that is comfortable to you.

    1. Shoulder Stand

Lie on the floor on your back and bring your knees up to your chest. Raise your legs perpendicular to the floor. Your elbows should be close to your body and your hands supporting your lower back. Do not use your head to support this pose. Use your shoulders and arms. Hold this pose for five minutes while breathing deeply.

    1. Legs on Wall Pose

Using an available wall, lie with your back on the floor and use the wall to support your legs at a 90 degree angle. Breathe deeply while holding this pose for five minutes.

    1. Skyward Bicycle Pose

In this pose, the motion is similar to how you move your legs while riding your bike. Start by lying on your back. Lift one leg, bend it and circle it forward as if riding a bicycle. Try not to touch the floor with the leg. Breathe in when the leg straightens, breathe out when it bends. Repeat this motion with the other leg. Repeat this motion 10 times on each side.

Try these three yoga poses and expand into other asanas once you feel you’ve mastered these positions. While Yoga and other exercises can alleviate some of your discomfort, you will want to consult with a vascular surgeon.
