    Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are made of elastic material that squeezes the leg. This squeezing effect puts pressure on the layers of tissue under your skin, which forces fluid back into the capillaries. Also, by compressing your legs, it can prevent blood from pooling into your legs, which can cause swelling and pain.

Your doctor may have recommended the use of compression socks if you have venous insufficiency. There are different levels of compression that he/she may prescribe for your condition. The pressures of compression wear are measured in mgHH.

    Mild Compression: 8 – 15 mgHH

The use of mild compression stockings is mainly for preventing fatigue of the legs. Individuals who work on their feet and pregnant women who need more support to prevent the formation of spider veins and varicose veins tend to use a mild compression stocking. Runners are known to use this level in support of their venous system during long runs.

    Moderate Compression: 15 – 20 mgHH

For those who are experiencing achy, tired, swollen legs, a moderate compression works well. This level helps in alleviating pain and prevention of mild to moderate varicose veins. Individuals who are at risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) can use 15 – 20 mgHH to help ward off the condition. Moderate compression is also used for those who will be traveling for long periods of time and need to reduce swelling or the possibility of blood clots in the legs. Individuals who have had sclerotherapy, a moderate compression can prevent the re-occurrence of spider and varicose veins.

    Firm Compression: 20 – 30 mgHH

In addition to the above conditions, if you are experiencing blood pressure loss upon standing, your doctor might recommend this level of stocking. Individuals who have had sclerotherapy, moderate to severe varicose veins, or are diagnosed with moderate edema (swelling due to fluid accumulation) can benefit from firm compression. Just like a moderate pressure compression stocking, firm pressure can help prevention of DVT.

    Extra Firm Compression: 30 – 40 mgHH

Used in support of legs with severe varicose veins and severe edema. Individuals who have had blood clots in the legs have a risk of developing Post Thrombotic Syndrome which can include swelling, redness and sores on the legs. An extra firm compression stocking can help manage these symptoms of PTS. Most patients who are prescribed an extra firm compression have severe vein insufficiency issues and is normally worn under a physician’s supervision.

You can find all levels of compression stockings in many categories. There are knee high socks, thigh high socks, full leg, pregnancy, and athletic stockings to choose from online and in stores. If your doctor has prescribed a specific pressure, be sure to purchase that level of support.
