varicose veinsVaricose veins can be painful and bothersome. Knowing what to do and what not to do when you have them can be beneficial. Certain lifestyle habit modifications are in your control. Even if you are genetically predisposed to this condition, you can still try to ward them off with these do’s and don’ts that we have compiled.

    • Do wear compression stockings to support your veins. The gentle pressure from the stockings will alleviate any swelling and reduce that heavy feeling in your legs.
    • Exercise on a regular basis to strengthen the blood flow throughout your body. Even walking at a slow pace is better than not exercising at all, so make a point to move your body.
    • Reduce the amount of sodium in your diet. Beware of the “hidden” places that sodium hides such as soups, processed foods, and restaurant foods.
    • Try to avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time. Either one of these is proven to cause damage to your veins, which ultimately creates varicose veins and spider veins.
    • Wear flat shoes instead of shoes that have heels. Flat shoes will engage the calf muscles when you walk. Your calf muscles are key in helping your veins move blood back to your heart. High heels force your calves to remain mainly stationary.
    • Do maintain a healthy weight. Obesity places a lot of pressure on your venous system, causing breakdowns in veins that can form varicose veins, blood clots, and venous insufficiency.

These do’s and don’ts are suggested for those who either already have varicose veins or could possibly have them in the future. You do not need to live with the pain, embarrassment, heaviness, and appearance of varicose veins.
